Gdansk, located on the Baltic Sea coast, is the largest city in the Pomerania region of northern Poland. Together with Gdynia and Sopot, Gdansk forms a large metropolitan area called Tricity. Gdansk is over one thousand years old distinguished by its long and complicated history. It was a main port of the powerful Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and later the Kingdom of Prussia and the German Empire. After World War I Gdansk was proclaimed the 'Free city of Danzig' - a semi-autonomous city-state that existed between 1920 and 1939. After the end of World War II it returned again to Poland.
